15th German Film Festival
This year’s 15th German film festival is returning to Spazju Kreattiv with seven exciting contemporary German-language films. Enjoy a variety of film genres dealing with different topics; for example, an award-winning docudrama, a comedy with famous actor Elyas M’Barek, a family film, an Oscar-winning thriller about life in the GDR and a historical drama about Empress Elisabeth of Austria known as Sisi, which was partly filmed in Malta.
Since 2024 marks the 100th year of Franz Kafka’s death, a special highlight of this year’s film festival will be the opening movie ‘The Glory of Life’ (2024) about the famous writer’s last months, the difficult relationship with his father and the romance with Dora Diamant. The opening film will be followed by a Q&A session with the film’s producer Helge Sasse.
The German film festival is organised by the German Maltese Circle in collaboration with the Department of German, University of Malta, and kindly supported by the Goethe Institute.
The Glory of Life / Die Herrlichkeit des Lebens (2023)

The last year of Franz Kafka’s life becomes his happiest. He has never before been able to allow himself to experience intimacy, he suffers from tuberculosis and is dependent on his overbearing family. But the worldly wise Dora Diamant accepts him as he is. And he accepts her. The two meet in 1923 on the Baltic Sea coast, where he is convalescing and she is working in a Jewish Volksheim. The memory of their time together will shape Dora for the rest of her life.
There will be a short welcome address to open the festival before the film screening.
After the screening, a Q&A session will be held held with the producer of the film, Helge Sasse. The session will be moderated by Katrin Dautel.

Far away and free from the constraints of the Viennese court, Empress Sisi spends the summer months at her residence on Corfu. The Hungarian Countess Irma Sztáray, a newcomer to her entourage, has to prove herself as a lady-in-waiting: She is supposed to dispel Sisi’s boredom and be equal to her concerning physical endeavors. Told from the perspective of the supposedly last lady-in-waiting, who accompanied Sisi on her travels until her death throughout Europe for many years, the film opens up a very personal view of life at the court of Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary and freely interprets this unconventional friendship between the two women.
