Part Two: Perestroika picks up where the first half of the two-part, multi-award winning play, Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes, leaves off.
Set against the backdrop of a mid-1980s America that’s caught between the conservative Reagan era and the AIDS crisis, Andrew Garfield (Silence, Hacksaw Ridge) plays Prior Walter, a gay New York socialite who’s struggling through the thick of the illness. When Prior’s lover, Louis, suddenly abandons him to his own devices, our protagonist begins to experience a series of angelic visitations that seem suspended between reality and emotional crisis. Meanwhile, in the wide world outside Prior’s apartment, complex life dramas unfold among his extended social circles, played by a strong cast: Denise Gough (People, Places and Things), Nathan Lane (The Producers), James McArdle (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and Russell Tovey (The Pass).
This dramatic second half sees the escalation of Prior’s visions, and the forging and unravelling of the relationships which surround him.
Based on a 1993 two-part play that won American playwright Tony Kushner multiple awards, this new staging of Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes, is directed by Marianne Elliott (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and War Horse), who has won the prestigious Laurence Olivier and Tony Awards.
