Auxetic materials: Expandable materials for greater comfort

4 February 2025 @ 7:00 pm

Auxetic materials, unlike most, become thicker when stretched. This rare property, observed in tendons and salamander skin, has been replicated by physicists and engineers in auxetic foam, which is now being upscaled for commercial use, promising enhanced comfort at a lower cost. Additionally, Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs) are being explored for auxeticity in specialised applications like nano-filters and antimicrobial uses.

On February 4th, 2025, Dr. Maria Cardona will discuss the creation and potential everyday uses of these innovative materials in a talk at Spazju Kreattiv, Valletta. The event will include a discussion with Dr. Matthew Xuereb and Ms. Mary-Grace Muscat, hosted by Malta Café Scientifique.

The event is supported by Spazju Kreattiv, the University of Malta, and the Malta Chamber of Scientists.
