What does the Future have in store for us? What will the Future be like? Will it be a Star Trek Future? Will it be a dystopian Blade Runner Future? Or will it be something else completely?
Edward Bond’s CHAIR is a trip to an apocalyptic future; one where family means nothing and people are divested of their humanity. It is a future where humanity becomes a product and life becomes a new version of Auschwitz. And what difference can a chair make in such a Future?
Alice takes care of Billie, a young girl in her early twenties who is autistic and has ADHD. Billie loves drawing and loves to show Alice whatever she draws. However, Alice is intent on keeping Billie a secret lest the State takes her away from her. Then, one day, a blast from Alice’s past hits the two women. Alice notices a young soldier outside their flat accompanying an elderly prisoner. Alice takes pity on the prisoner and decides to offer her a chair.
It is a decision that changes their lives altogether. A decision that brings the State into their lives.
