This comic ballet about two sweethearts and a diabolical inventor is adapted from E.T.A Hoffman’s stories, The Sandman and The Doll. We meet the lovely Swanhilda and her fiance Franz when they are about to get married, but Franz’s wandering eye is drawn to the mysterious figure of Coppélia, who sits in the balcony of one Doctor Coppélius – a sinister presence who may or may not deal in dark magic…
This unique ballet is at turns comic, dark, and rollicking, with a charming main ensemble and a supporting cast of villagers and dancing dolls. The Bolshoi’s version of Coppélia maintains the original 19th century choreography of this ebullient comedy involving a feisty heroine, a fickle fiancee, and an eccentric inventor. The company’s stunning corps de ballet shines in the divertissements and the ballet’s famous “dance of the hours,” with principal dancers who abound in youthful energy and irresistible humor.
