Mystery looms over nineteenth-century St Petersburg, Russia. A brilliant yet conflicted youth, Rodion Raskolnikov has committed a crime and is now enduring brutal pangs of conscience, one after the other. His soul, burdened by the sin of murder, is torn between faith and faithlessness, hope and hopelessness. Meanwhile, an investigation is being conducted by detective Porfiry Petrovich whose suspicions are drawing close on Rodion. Yet, beneath this darkening cloud, love strikes instead – an experience of love which may very well liberate him from the shackles of despair….
Crime and Punishment is a 1970 screen adaptation by director, Lev Kulidzhanov, of the great novel carrying the same name, penned by Fyodor Dostoyevsky and published 150 years ago.
