EVERY SAINT HAS A PAST & EVERY SINNER HAS A FUTURE
CO-MA presents his second solo exhibition curated by Lily Agius with an interpretation of the Seven Deadly Sins—Pride, Sloth, Anger, Lust, Gluttony, Greed, and Envy.
Drawing inspiration from both Norse mythology and the rich traditions of Renaissance and Baroque art, this body of work features large-scale paintings executed in oil on canvas and wood.
Not long ago, questioning religion felt almost taboo. Monarchs ruled by what they called ‘divine right,’ claiming their authority came directly from the one true God. This longstanding tradition often pushed people to suppress their true feelings and desires, creating a gap between human nature and religious expectations. After the Reformation in 1517, this divide became even more pronounced. It was suggested that forgiveness could come through generous donations to the Church. Thank goodness for all the religious teachings that aim to guide us toward a righteous path! But let’s be honest—there’s a fine line we must tread here. Still, at the end of the day, it’s our actions and choices that drive real change – and rules will always be broken. The humanist movement sparked by Petrarch’s discoveries led to a cultural renaissance and a wave of free thinking. This shift opened the door for more questioning and personal interpretations of faith than ever before.
So, where do you find yourself on this spectrum? Today, we have the freedom to live our lives as we choose—but when do we cross those lines? When do we start to blur the boundaries
between what’s real and what’s just an illusion, or between happiness and deception? Can you take a moment to reflect on your actions or those of others around you? Has anything truly changed over time?
