Malta Cafe Scientifique – 3D Printing in structural engineering
Date and time
Wednesday 13th April 2021, 7pm
Understanding how architectural designs hold up to real-world use has been a focus of engineers for millennia.
Certain sacrifices have always been necessary to make sure attractive building designs are structurally sound. Dr Jeanette Mireille Muñoz Abela is here to explain how robust, visually striking architecture is possible even without using human hands. Join us on 13th April 7:00 pm at Valletta’s Studio B at Spazju Kreattiv for this exciting talk and discussion. Structural optimization is the process of maximizing function and aesthetic of while minimizing materials. In recent years, what used to require hundreds of tedious calculations is now accomplished in seconds with dedicated computer software. The actual construction of structures, however, has so far relied on traditional methods, even when aided by construction equipment. However, by pairing this computer-centered design process with the concept of additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing, promises better sustainability, affordability, and freedom of design.
