Met Opera 2016/2017 in Cinema – La Traviata

11 March 2017 @ 6:55 pm

€18

An original production of the Salzburger Festspiele at the Metropolitan Opera

“Our mistake, you see, was to write interminable large operas, which had to fill an entire evening. And now along comes someone with a one or two-act opera without all that pompous nonsense – that was a happy reform.”
Giuseppe Verdi

Live: Saturday 11 March 2017, 6.55PM
Encore: Sunday 2 April 2017, 5.00PM; Sunday 25 June 2017, 5.00PM
Matinée: Sunday 9 July 2017, 2.30PM

Venue: Cinema (St James Cavalier)

Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata survived a notoriously unsuccessful opening night to become one of the best-loved operas in the repertoire. Following the larger scale dramas of Rigoletto and Il Trovatore, its intimate scope and subject matter inspired the composer to create some of his most profound and heartfelt music.

Considered a pinnacle of the soprano repertoire, the role of opera’s most beloved heroines, Violetta, is sung by Sonya Yoncheva opposite Michael Fabiano as her lover, Alfredo, and Thomas Hampson as his father, Germont.
