‘Bear in mind that you are not making music for your own pleasure, but for the pleasure of your audience.’

Richard Strauss (Elektra)

With what is often deemed as the largest orchestra for any repertory opera, Patrice Chéreau’s genius production is post-humously brought to the MET Opera stage with soprano Nina Stemme as the heroic Elektra in her primal quest for vengeance for the murder of her father, Agamemnon. In a single act, the drama unfolds with rare vocal and orchestral power, resulting in an opera which is an intense mix of Greek tragedy stirred by the  unsettling insights of Freudian theory and psychoanalysis.
