Whether for their aesthetic beauty or for their practical use, artisanal products have been an integral part of our daily lives since time immemorial, becoming deeply rooted in our local culture, heritage, and traditions throughout the centuries. As part of its role to raise awareness and enhance the appreciation of local crafts, thereby contributing to the revival, preservation, and long-term sustainability of artisan skills in the Maltese islands, the Malta Crafts Foundation organises the Premju Ġieħ l-Artiġjanat Malti.

Held on an annual basis, the Awards recognise the excellence in craftsmanship, innovative product ideas, and key contributions to the local artisan sector in the preceding months. The Awards are divided in three main categories, all of which are being showcased at this Exhibition – whether physically, or digitally on the screens around the Atrium or in the corridor leading to it.

The first category focuses on the artisanal products as an expression of local artisans’ talent, awarding some of the ingenious creativity within textiles; food and beverage; glass works and ceramics; precious materials; modelling, painting, and sculpting; non-precious materials; and – for the first time this year – the artisanal products manufactured by local feast organisations, which are often only made possible through a collective effort that brings together a myriad of skills. With the exception of the latter sub-category, which could only be featured on one of the screens due to the dimensions of the entries, all other artisanal products contesting this category are being physically showcased at this Exhibition. All the submissions in this category are also automatically in contention for the coveted People’s Choice Award, an online public vote currently open on the Malta Crafts Foundation website,

Through the second category, the Premju Ġieħ l-Artiġjanat Malti also seeks to inspire artisanship and innovation through collaboration, enticing local artisans to share ideas and work together in order to submit project proposals that bring in innovation to the sector.

By bringing these proposals to fruition, the artisans would be enabled to tap into markets that were previously unexploited whilst at the same time ensuring certain artisan skills are adapted to the realities of today’s world. Finally, the third category is intended to recognize the efforts of the artisans and the contributions they made to the sector in the year leading to the particular edition of the Premju Ġieħ l-Artiġjanat Malti. Awards are given to the student of the year; trainer of the year; emerging maker of the year; an artisan taking initiatives towards sustaining endangered crafts; maker of the year; and – last but not least – as a recognition for the lifetime achievements of master artisans.
