Quintessence is an immersive experience at the forefront of artistic experiments in digital age storytelling technique. Based on innovative sound art and intricate narrative, Quintessence is a solo live performance by sound artist, composer and musician Renzo Spiteri, that challenges the audience to reconsider what sound can mean and how the boundaries of performance and spectator, organic and inorganic, sound and instrument are rendered fluid and all encompassing. With a strong element of improvisation and using a sculptural array of acoustic instruments, found large-scale objects and live electronic manipulation, Renzo creates an environment of unique visual possibilities and sonic sculptures, presenting the audience with a rare and highly artistic feat.
The performance offers an additional curatorial level. In close collaboration with Renzo, writer and researcher Giuliana Fenech draws upon studies of sound and auditory culture as an upcoming mode that possibly compliments what the visual can do, in certain instances superseding it, in order to challenge audience perceptions about a straightforward interpretation. In a reading that is delivered after the performance, she provokes the audience to rethink the piece, revisiting the multiple journeys that are embedded within its story.
Quintessence was premiered in February 2015 at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester (UK) in partnership with Future Everything Festival 2015.
