Refugee Week Malta: Green Borders
Forming part of a global movement that began in the UK in 1998 to coincide with World Refugee Day on June 20th, it was launched in 2022 aims to facilitate understanding beyond labels and foster connections across various communities.
This Movement of Welcome embraces a diverse programme of arts and cultural activities, reclaiming the term ‘refugee’ and affirming everyone’s right to safety, refuge, and culture. Focusing on the possibility for inclusion and integration, this local edition creates spaces for people from all walks of life to, celebrate their diversity and have a shared experience of being in community together
Now in its third year, Refugee Week Malta has grown into a diverse festival developed in collaboration with various artists, organisations, and public entities these include Spark 15, Sudanese, Eritrean and Libyan Communities, Afro Deli, Malta Refugee Council, JRS Malta, MGRM, Moviment Graffitti, Friends of the Earth, El Hiblu 3 Coalition, Unfinished Arts Space, Qawra Community Space, FSWS and the Community Police.
In the treacherous and swampy forests that make up the so-called “green border” between Belarus and Poland, refugees from the Middle East and Africa trying to reach the European Union are trapped in a geopolitical crisis cynically engineered by Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko. In an attempt to provoke Europe, refugees are lured to the border by propaganda promising easy passage to the EU. Finding themselves pawns in this hidden war, the lives of Julia, a newly minted activist who has given up her comfortable life, Jan, a young border guard, and a Syrian family intertwine. Thirty years after her Oscar-nominated film Europa Europa, Agnieszka Holland’s poignant and essential Green Border opens our eyes and speaks to the heart, challenging viewers to reflect on the moral choices that fall to ordinary people every day.
