Documentary film screening and discussion

Date and time: Saturday 17 December 2016, 8.00pm
Venue: Cinema (St James Cavalier)

Electronic Music Malta presents the screening of the documentary ‘The Sound of Belgium’. This documentary explores the rich but untold story of Belgian dance music.

“From the dance halls with Decap organs to the golden days of Popcorn.”

“From EBM and New Beat to Belgian House and Techno.”

‘The Sound of Belgium’ is an in depth exploration of the origins of Belgian entertainment culture, which dates back to the post-war dance halls equipped with Decap organs up into the successes of the early Belgian synth-pop acts. It was, however, the end of the 80s, when this small European country was to leave a permanent mark in the history of electronic music. “New Beat” was an instant global hit, an almost surreal type of electronic dance music and its unexpected, but short lived success left a mark on a new generation of musicians both in Belgium and the whole world for years to come.

Several of the artists and record label owners featured in this documentary actually have connections with the Maltese electronic music scene. A discussion will be held following the screening.
