Transparencies of the soul
Lucia Vallejo is Basque and has a background in art history, which is not something that should be overlooked. She came to sculpture by way of painting, not in the sense that she had been a painter, but in the sense that she had studied painting’s mechanisms and its structure.
Vallejo dismantles painting, using the canvas not as a support but as a living material. Lucia Vallejo’s interest in the world of glass dates from 2019 and she approached the medium as a sculptor who carries painting in her mind’s eye at all times. Rather than simply abandoning canvas, she did something without precedent in the thousand-year history of Murano glass: she burned it during the glass-making process itself. Vallejo has now produced her latest work in the Czech Republic working with Bohemian glass.

In this workshop, we will walk through the world of Lucia Vallejo exploring her exhibition, Transparencies of the Soul. In the same way that Valleja expands the definition of painting in her work, we will also think outside the box! We will expand our understanding of the canvas and stretcher and turn painting into sculpture!
