Lisa Iglesias uses an early, labor intensive animation technique to create her videos. The artist composes thousands of individual drawings and collages on paper that she then documents in sequence to produce a sense of motion. Iglesias emphasizes the handmade quality of her animations through her attention to repetition and imperfection, producing looping moving pictures. Lines and forms continuously and irregularly jump, producing a frenzied visual energy.
One of the artist’s more recent videos, &YOU&ME&US& reflects the woven relationships between drawing & language and between digital & analog processes. Rather then moving linearly towards a conventional narrative, the video is composed of chapters that pivot around related concepts of time and transformation.
In one chapter of &YOU&ME&US, a poet recites a children’s story about a chain of cause and effect in which small gestures incite large consequences. At the end of the story the direction of cause and effect reverses, echoing the palindromic quality of the exhibition title, XEWWEX. Iglesias teases out the 360 degree gesture of drawing and video production, taking a look at the causal relationships between time, subjectivity and wonder.
Lisa Iglesias is part of our artists’ residency programme.
