Unifaun Theatre Productions was the brainchild of Adrian Buckle, who, in 2005, decided to found the
company to explore new ideas in Theatre. This led to the introduction of several contemporary
playwrights to Maltese audiences. Before Unifaun, Theatre stalwarts like Edward Bond, Philip
Ridley, Brad Birch, Mark Ravenhill, Sarah Kane and Anthony Neilson had never been performed in
Malta. Heavily influenced by the theatre of Edward Bond, Unifaun reinvigorated a theatre scene
that was growing stale and repetitive. Unifaun also led the way with the in-yer-face genre they
introduced to Malta. This led to the famous battle against Theatre Censorship in 2009, culminating in
its removal some years later. By that time, Unifaun was working internationally, also commissioning
playwrights like Edward Bond and Brad Birch.
This book covers the entire history of the company with anecdotes from every production that
Unifaun offered, reviews from the most prominent theatre critics of the time, production photos
from acclaimed photographers, set designs by Unifaun mainstay set designer, Romualdo Moretti,
and essays on the philosophy of the company’s theatre by several highly acclaimed theatre
personalities, both local and foreign.
“Unifaun, brave and inventive, deserve this book. Adrian Buckle put new life into our theatre.” –
Dr Paul Xuereb, Drama Critic for The Sunday Times of Malta for forty years and author of Curtain
Up (2017).
